I used to call myself stupid out loud, skip meals, work through being ill. My daughter started doing the same things and I did not notice until it was already a habit in her.

We used to run the house like a reward scheme. Sticker charts, treat jars, two quid for unloading the dishwasher. Eventually we stopped, and somehow things got better.
