Turned down a job because of a 5k pay gap. Regret it constantly.

There were two offers on the table. One of them just felt right, I don't really know how else to say it. The manager seemed like she'd actually show me things, not just hand me tasks. I sat in my car after the second interview for probably longer than I should have, radio off, not checking my phone. The other place paid more. Five grand more. Which sounds like a lot when you're saying it out loud.

The takeaway

I don't think the five grand was ever really the reason. Probably some mix of not trusting a feeling I had in a car park, and something like pride. I do think growth matters more than the number, especially early on.

I was made redundant and it turned out to be a gift

I had moved to this country in my mid twenties with basically nothing, built up a stable job, a routine, a coffee order the woman at the desk knew without asking. It felt like I had finally figured it out. I had not figured it out. I had just stopped moving.

The takeaway

I would never have left on my own. I was too settled, too used to the routine, the coffee order, all of it. Sometimes being pushed is the only way you go anywhere. I think. I am not totally sure that is true.
